Cory Landrum Next Generation Tournament Update

 January 25, 2010

Our meeting for the Cory Landrum Next Generation Tournament was held on January 21, 2010 hosted by Pastor Roy Hill and Mrs. Cindy Johnson at the First Baptist Church Satsuma. Pastor Roy started our meeting with prayer. We would like at this time to stop and thank them for their desire to be involved, as well as, providing a place to meet. Once again, thank you First Baptist Church Satsuma.

Dale Carpenter started the meeting by thanking all guest for coming. Going straight into the reason for the tournament Dale and David Henson Sr. explained why each group of guest was asked to come. Representatives from the Alabama Marine Police, Satsuma Police, Satsuma Fire and Rescue, several local churches, Fish N Fever Tournament Trail and local sponsors were present and all spoke on their role in making this tournament and scholarship established in memory of Cory Landrum a complete and total success.

Future meetings in the next several weeks will take place with all volunteers, both of an individual nature, as well as, all organizations that have key roles. Things like water safety, fire and rescue, police protection and food and refreshments are just a few of the many things that were discussed. Brother Clinton Hobbs, Pastor from Fountain Of Life Church in Saraland, Alabama and Jerry Story from Team Jesus Ministries talked of their plans on providing food for fishing teams along with the spectators at the tournament's weight in. Richard Miller from the Alabama Marine police, along with office Bill Carol, spoke on their role in helping with the tournament. Officer Miller is over the new department of Education and Out Reach. Director J.T. Jenkins asked Officer Miller to come and show there support for what he fills is a very worth while cause.  Officer Jana Dukes from the Satsuma Police Department passed on to us their commitment to protecting and keeping everyone safe both at the tournament, as well as, round the clock protection for those at  the LaQuinta Hotel  in Satsuma or the Compound at Satsuma City Hall if needed for  all out of town guest and participant's boats and equipment. Chief Clyde Miller of Fire and Rescue explained that a medical fire and rescue command center would be on site.  Last to speak was Tournament Director and Owner Wayne Miller from Fish N Fever Tournament Trail on his role as our Tournament Weight Master.

David Henson Sr. finished up the meeting with an emotional moment in letting everyone know that Cory Landrum is much missed but is and will continue to be a part of our lives and be a voice in the future of our young generation of leaders and anglers. With that, Brother Hobbs closed our meeting with prayer.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO…….

The End of the Year/ Christmas Banquet was held Friday, December 18th in Saraland at Winzell’s Oyster House. The event was a great success. Much fellowship was shared, along with lots of laughter and even some tears were shared when honorary member, Cory Landrum’s parents were presented with Cory’s Lifetime Honorary Memberships Certificate. Kerri Landrum stood up on behalf of her husband, club member Robert Landrum and her family to thank the club for the dedication and hard work everyone has put in to keep their son, Cory’s, legacy continued with the upcoming  event “The Cory Landrum Next Generation Tournament”. (For more information on the tournament and how to sign up or volunteer, go to the “Special Events” tab).

Wayne Miller from Fish N’ Fever was a guest at the banquet. He spoke to the club members and congratulated them on what a great season the club had. He gave praising words to the club in regard to the club’s purpose and mission and how he, as an outsider and a very involved asset to the fishing community, sees how it is  being carried out on a daily basis. He encouraged the team to keep up the good work. Mr. Miller also invited and encouraged all of Northbound Bassmaster’s members to take part in the upcoming Fish N’ Fever Trails.

Finally, awards were given within the club. Dale Carpenter presented the 1st through 3rd place members for this season with trophies. Finishing in first place in the club was David Henson. David Henson Jr., followed VERY close behind his father in second and the third place belonged to Jason Kyser. The “Lunker Award” was presented to Daryl Few.  These awards are based on the overall leading performances calculated by weights during the club’s fishing seasons.

Jason Kyser presented “Sportsman of the Year Award”. Although there is usually only one recipient for this award, Jason presented both Dale Carpenter and David Henson Sr., with a trophy. Jason stated that he felt they both deserved this honor for the birth and all of the time and effort that they have put in and continue to put in to ensure that the Cory Landrum Next Generation Tournament is a great success and that their fellow honorary member, Cory, not be forgotten. Both Dale and David were very proud to accept this award. David told his fellow members that this fishing year has been a great one for him, being named City Champion and receiving first place in the club standings, but this award meant more to him than any of that.

The second ever “Lifetime Membership Award” was presented to co-chairman, Clint Clark. The only other recipient of this award was given to Kevin Carpenter, Northbound Bassmaster’s club president in a previous year. A special award presentation was made by Dale Carpenter for “Outstanding Services” for outside club members. Two of these awards were given out to Kerri Landrum and me, Jennifer Taylor, for the roles taken in the involvement of the Cory Landrum Next Generation Tournament. I believe I speak on both Kerri and I to say this was definitely a surprise but a very welcomed and most appreciated award. And last but not least, “The Brown Bag Award” was given to Nathan Lawson by Daryl Few, last year’s winner. Club members look forward to the presentation of this award every year. Daryl chose Nathan this year because of his “trolling motor incident”, where Nathan failed to “test out” his repairs before heading back to the waters…. THREE FISHING TRIPS IN A ROW. Daryl presented him with a paddle and a sign the read “Test it before you use it”. Nathan will have all of next fishing season to decide who will be the lucky (or unlucky) winner of “The Brown Bag Award” at next year’s banquet. This award always keeps the members on the toes (or at least attempts to).

After all of the awards, Dirty Santa was in action. The wives and girlfriends of the member played it pretty low key, with the exception of the crochet Christmas blanket made by Sheila Carpenter, but the men however, were a different story. They definitely played it dirty! The fight was on over several of the gifts opened. Clint Clark I believe was most unlucky when it came to keeping a gift, but was definitely was a great sport and ended up at the very end receiving a nice gift packet. I am thinking that payback is in order for Clint next year! Watch out men!

The club talked afterwards about upcoming dates to mark on calendars, the upcoming memorial tournament and other club business briefly to wrap it all up. The banquet was a great success and accomplishment. This being the first banquet I ever attended, I must say that it was a pleasure and I look forward to attending another.

Meeting held with Mayor William Stewart & Councilman Billy Jackson

On December 15, 2009, Northbound Bassmaster team members, Dale Carpenter and David Henson Sr. met with Satsuma Mayor, William Stewart and Councilman Billy Jackson to discuss details on the upcoming Cory Landrum Next Generation Memorial Tournament. Such details discussed were police protection on boats and holding areas to be provided for all out of town participants, spectator settings, communications, tournament parking, weigh in details, sites for pre-meeting and food preparations, and the involvement with other committee organizations.

Much progress was made and the City officials seems to be very pleased with the progress that has been made thus far and are excited to be such a large part in this event.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, December 18th at Winzell’s Oyster House following the End of the Year/ Christmas Banquet. At that time, discussion will be held on the details of the next meeting with the City of Satsuma, Club and other volunteer organizations.

Stay posted for continuing updates.

DAVID HENSON NAMED 2009 CITY CHAMPION

On November 7, 2009 the city Championship was held at Dead Lake Landing. This tournament has been put on each year annually since 1974 by what is today known as the MBA (Mobile Bass Association). The top six (6) members of all bass clubs from Mobile, Baldwin, Washington and Clark counties (southwest AL) that belong to the MBA are taken and fish the first Saturday of November to determine a city champion as well as a club championship. We at Northbound Bassmasters, want to congratulate David Henson Sr. for becoming this year's City Champion. Congratulation goes out to David Henson Jr. for finishing second just ounces behind his father. David Jr. won the City Championship in 2007.    For the rest of the team Jason Kyser, Daryl Few, Michael Peacock and Dale Carpenter; congratulation are also in order as our top six this year finished second in the club standings.
